A Vision Realized
For decades, the Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi club house has stood as a beacon on the rugged West Coast. However, the ravages of time and the harsh conditions had taken their toll, leaving the building unsafe and inadequate for the club.
In 2010, a bold initiative was launched to create a modern, purpose-built facility that would not only serve the surf lifesaving community but also cater to the broader needs of the local community. The new building was designed to accommodate a range of activities, including training, search and rescue operations, and community events.
A Community Effort
With the support of the community and dedicated fundraising efforts, the club was able to secure the necessary resources to embark on this ambitious project. Construction commenced in April 2024 with the bittersweet demolition of the old club house. While the demolition was a poignant moment, marking the end of an era, it also represented the beginning of a new chapter for Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi.
A Brighter Future
The new facility opened on the 1st November 2025, provides a state-of-the-art home for the club, enabling them to continue their vital work of safeguarding lives and promoting water safety. It also serve as a valuable community asset, offering a space for various events and activities.
